PMO practitioners from across the globe enjoyed a unique experience on the 4th October 2018, when they gathered in their hundreds at FuturePMO to explore future challenges and solutions with industry leading speakers and fellow PMO peers. Created by Wellingtone and supported by Microsoft and the Association for Project Management (APM), this not-for-profit, sales-free event delighted delegates with its exceptional calibre of learning and networking opportunities as well as its fun, friendly approach – described as an experience “not to be missed” (Jaguar Landrover).
Gearing PMO Professionals Up for Future Challenges
Leading lights of the PMO world delivered a packed agenda of interactive presentations during the one-day conference, which this year carried a Sci-fi theme. Stephen Carver (Cranfield University) inspired delegates with his trademark lively and irreverent keynote style as he tackled the issue of PMO complexity. Michael Cooch (PwC) and Allan Rocha (PMOtto) challenged delegates to consider how new technologies including artificial intelligence will reshape the world of PMO – whilst Fujistsu’s Paul Jones explored the exponential benefits of knowledge sharing in the PMO and beyond.
Other standout topics included managing risk and governance (Walter Macharg, Crossrail), leading challenging PMOs (Ben Brownlee, BBC), delivering cultural change (Alicia Barlow, Coal Authority), and investing in a PMO during tough times (Scott Young, Leicestershire County Council).
Revealing the Winners of the PMO Global Awards
FuturePMO also welcomed the finalists of the prestigious PMO Global Awards – the PMO Global Alliance’s annual award ceremony, designed to recognise the world’s most outstanding PMOs. With entries from 64 countries on 5 continents, the final awards were presented by the Alliance’s Chair, Americo Pinto. Representing the overall winner of PMO of the Year 2018 was Bianca Ilibasic, Head of Strategic PMO for Manulife Asia, who said: “We are so excited to have won this award, as a team we feel privileged to be part of a family of great PMOs.” After presenting the awards, Americo commented: “As one of the leading conferences in Europe, we consider FuturePMO to be the perfect event to highlight the importance of these truly global awards and honour the winners.”
Harnessing the Power of PMO Technology
The programme also included a dedicated technology stream, with experts from Wellingtone and Microsoft showcasing the latest PPM platforms and toolkits for PMOs. Representing Microsoft was Project Solution Specialist, Andy Willis, who said: “As the speed of change grows faster and teams become more distributed, collaboration is a key consideration for today’s PMOs. We’re really excited to be supporting FuturePMO today and meeting delegates who are keen to explore the latest that the Microsoft Project Online has to offer, especially in the context of the Microsoft 365 suite.”
Creating a Unique, Fun and Friendly Environment
The event’s Sci-fi theme, complete with life sized props, saw many delegates grabbing their lightsabers, donning their helmets and channelling their inner Skywalker during the plentiful networking opportunities. The theme was a hit with everyone – with delegates declaring it “a great talking point that injected a fun atmosphere into the day” (John Lewis) and rating the event as “the best conference I have ever attended” (University of Edinburgh).
Early bird tickets are already available for next year’s Future PMO, which takes place on the 17th October 2019 in London. With limited space available and a ‘License to PMO’ Special-Agent theme already announced, delegates are encouraged to book early to secure their attendance at an event described by delegates as “designed for the PMO professional” (Knowledge Transfer Network) and “an event you MUST attend at least once in your life!” (Waltham Forest Council).
