Project Methodology Development

A key criteria associated with attaining higher project management maturity is the application of a consistent, fit-for-purpose project management methodology. Rather than project success being wholly dependent on the skills of individual Project Managers, they should be supported by the organisation with a fit for purpose methodology based on best practice.

Many organisations look to adopt PRINCE2 and struggle, others look to define their own approach with limited best practice support and experience. Your project methodology should support your types of projects, your people, your ways of working and your stakeholders. A suite of practical tools and templates sits at the heart of your methodology to ensure consistency of application across the whole project lifecycle.

The graphic below illustrates a typical simple, practical, fit-for-purpose project methodology. This approach is structured around key decision points; Stage Gates and retains a suite of practical document templates to support the Project Manager and Sponsor through the project lifecycle.

What Project Methodology Development Services do we offer?

We provide practical expertise, guidance and support to clients looking to develop, assess or improve their project management methodology. Developing a practical project methodology is often the first step in developing customised project management training. Our extensive practical experience running projects, programmes and PMOs ensures our advice is based on practical real world experience using tried and tested tools & techniques that we ourselves have utilised and developed over many years.

A typical client enquiry might start with “can you train us to be better at running projects?” Yes, we can, but what approach shall we train? Do you have a project methodology; a defined approach to selecting, planning, running and closing projects? For many organisations, the answer is “no”, or “yes, but never used as it’s too complex”. We want to make sure we develop project management methodology and customised project management training courses that reflect your organisation, your way of working and your training needs. The first port of call on this journey is developing a consistent project methodology.

Developing a project methodology does not need to take long. We provide Methodology PRIME, a fixed price, five-day service package that fits most client needs. We will work with you and your colleagues and develop a practical, fit for purpose methodology, complete with all supporting documents and templates as part of a rapid engagement. This methodology is your methodology for your projects, your organisation and your people.
We have a considerable track record in helping clients develop their project management methodology and running customised training courses as part of a roll out. Please read our Case Studies.
