Microsoft Power BI SSRS Project Reporting

Project Reporting is the primary way in which stakeholders and interested parties gain an insight to project performance, so that they can identify the initiatives that require assistance.

However, within most organisations that don’t have a centralised PPM solution in place reporting tends to be a manual endeavour, using Microsoft Excel. Therefore there is an opportunity for the reported KPI’s and other insights to be subjective, whilst issues often persist with an overall lack of consistency from one project manager to another.

Aside from having inconsistent tendencies, manual project reporting can be time consuming. Approx. 47% of the respondents to the State of Project Management Survey (2017) stated that they spent 1 day or more collating projects reports each month. This time could be better used from a project manager’s perspective and increasingly stakeholders want to be able to self-service and access standardised reports and dashboards when they want and on whichever device they want.

Reporting Services is a powerful reporting platform that is available with SQL Server that customers typically deploy via Azure or on-premise to create, publish, and manage reports which are delivered to the right users in various ways, via a web browser, on a users mobile device, or as an email in their inbox.

SSRS Project Reporting

Traditionally, SSRS has been employed to provide users with “traditional” text focused, paginated document style reports (project status / highlight reports) with a fixed-layout that is optimised for printing, or exporting to PDF and Word files; however, the latest version also now offers “mobile reports” and an updated “modern web portal”.
