
In what seems no time at all, we find ourselves in the second half of 2010, and here at Wellingtone for the first time this year we are seeing a slowing down in the number of new vacancies coming though each week, and to add to the frustration of the many applicants eagerly chasing down their next role, an increase in the amount of time it seems to be taking for employers too to give any feedback on CVs submitted, let alone to grant an interview. On the face of it, it would seem that demand for Project Management professionals in the South East has returned to growth, but a detailed look at the underlying figures suggest that compared to earlier this year, demand has dropped back slightly and salaries are still continuing on a downward trend. Job demand in London is actually below last year’s levels and there are precious few signs that the private sector is keen, or able to take up the slack in advance of public sector cuts. In recent years there has been increasing recognition that for projects to be successful they must be soundly based; projects that fail have the seeds of their failure implanted at the outset. In this article I present a framework for understanding the skills managers use to shape sound projects, and conceptualise these skills in terms of the craft of a hypothetical expert individual - the project shaper.

Here at Wellingtone, it was a positive April, and we continue to be cautiously optimistic for an equally successful May and June. According to the CIPD , job prospects in general are improving as the UK emerges from recession, the public sector in undoubtedly bracing itself for “widespread” cuts, but the good news is that recruitment in private companies is expected to “surge in the second half of 2010″.
